Tom McMurray

Tom McMurray is a documentary photographer based in Boulder, Colorado and President of Marine Ventures Foundation. His photography has been featured in several conservation campaigns and scientific books. In additional the Foundation has funded a number of documentary films that tell the stories of environmental conservation efforts and the impacts of wealth extraction on ecosystems.

I am Tom McMurray and this website covers my creative work including documentary photography, film production and nonprofit work. My first photography experiences began in college with film cameras. Since then I almost always have a camera with me everyday. I shoot what moves me and then I look deeper for the "what's really happening here" and try to tell that story.  I get pretty immersive about my work and this Linesin Country project is one of those 10 year projects that just gets bigger and deeper and more meaningful with time.

The idea of cultural landscapes has been a part of my work for the last 20 years even if I did not know what it was. I was concerned with the power of wealth extraction to not only decimate the environment but also decimate people's connection to nature. We found that in almost everywhere we worked - the US, South America, Mexico, Australia and Cuba. The one place that seems to withstand this was the Kimberley in Western Australia. But that protection has and will be an ongoing battle to protect country and the cultural heritage of the indigenous people who have lived there for 1000 generations. Some things in life are worth fighting for in life. This is my fight now and going forward.
